How to Tone Down Your Black Granite Countertops

If you have black granite countertops, you know they make a massive statement in your kitchen or bathroom. If you are worried they are too bold or give off too much of a dark tone, then you may be reluctant to show them off. Here are ways you can tone down your black and bold countertops so they shine in their own right without taking over your whole space.

Counterbalance with metallics

Black is a statement color that needs no introduction, so the best way to show off your granite countertops that are dark in color is to showcase them with metallic accents. Do this by placing gold or copper vases on their surfaces, installing metallic hardware in shelves and cupboards, or even placing a metallic-lined table runners along the surfaces. The rich accents will brighten the black, making your countertops more inviting.

Add yellow lighting

If you have solid black countertops, then they may appear dull under traditional lighting. Yellow lighting can brighten them up and make them more reflective, which in turn gives your darker countertops a deeper, more welcoming hue. Consider placing a table lamp on your counters with bold yellow lighting or changing out nearby lights for a honeyed hue to make your ebony surfaces look less harsh.

Opt for jewel tones

Emerald, eggplant, cobalt blue, and clear crystal can all be beautiful colors that help lighten up rich, intense black and make it more modern. Do this by painting your walls a deep jewel tone to make your countertops actually stand out even more rather than placing them in the shadows. If you don't like the darker jewel tones, opt for richer versions of pastels you like, such as salmon instead of light pink or goldenrod instead of classic yellow. A vibrantly-hued wall can reflect nicely off freshly-polished granite, making the darker tone far less intimidating as a result. You can also use jewel tones for curtains, towels, and other accent pieces in your kitchen or bathroom.

Having granite countertops in such a dark color can make quite the statement in your home. If you want to make these surfaces less severe you can utilize many different decorating styles. You can get samples from your local paint supply store to help you determine which hues will work best to offset the bold colors of your granite surfaces.
