How to Have a Medieval LARP Wedding
If you are a member of a medieval live action role play (LARP) group and you are getting married, you might consider holding your wedding at the LARP itself. After all, these are the people who see a whole other side of you, a side you don't show to everyone. If this is the case, you will want to create a scene that keeps in time with a medieval setting in order to keep the LARP as authentic as possible. At the same time, you may need to take specific steps to make sure you and your partner get married rather than your character and your partner's character.
Avoid Electricity
Medieval times did not involve things like electricity, so you'll need to plan accordingly. If you don't want to use a lot of candles for lighting, consider having the wedding during the day so lighting isn't an issue. When it comes to music, ask your local "bard" to step in and play a few tunes or gather up some local LARP musicians who may want to share their talents.
Use Natural Decorations
Unless you are some sort of royalty at your LARP event, you aren't going to have a lot of decorations in the way of material items. Instead, you'll rely on natural elements. However, those elements may not be available in your area, so don't be afraid to buy them. Flowers are the most obvious choice. Have a talk with your local florist, like Charlotte County Flowers, and see if you can get some arrangements that involve flowers that are in season. They don't need to come from your LARP area, but using flowers that are in season will help keep the LARP more authentic. If the wedding is in the fall, combine flowers with dried leaves to create decorations. Just avoid flashy materials and stick with subdued colors.
Say Your Vows
When it comes time to say your vows, you may want to arrange to change the "out-of-game" symbol, which is traditionally a hand over your head. This could take some of the romance away from the setting. Instead, let the characters know ahead of time that there will be a pause while you say your vows. Afterwards, your characters can say their vows so that your characters are married in game as well as you and your spouse being married out of game.
LARP communities tend to be close-knit groups that share in each others' successes and trials during game time as well as out of game. Talk with the leaders of your community to learn about any special considerations you need to have in order to marry characters in game. Afterwards, celebrate with a clash of drinking horns and dance to the song that your bard offers up.
