Add Fresh Paint And Floral Stenciling To Your Home's Shutters

Paint the wooden window shutters on your home and add some floral stenciling to give them an original appearance that complements the color of your house. After finishing, plant some flowers underneath the windows to accompany the new designs:

Materials

  • sandpaper (low and fine grit)
  • hand sander
  • mild detergent
  • water
  • sponge
  • acrylic paint
  • paintbrushes (various sizes)
  • paint tray
  • flower stencils
  • masking tape
  • annuals or perennials
  • garden shovel
  • mulch
  • garden hose
  • vinyl tarp
  • scissors
  • measuring tape

Sand And Clean The Wood

Place a vinyl tarp on the ground, underneath the shutters. If the paint that is presently on the shutters is chipped or peeling, sand the surface of the wood with a hand sander and low grit paper. Once the surface is even and paint is no longer flaking off, lightly sand the wood with fine grit paper. Clean the wood with mild detergent, water, and a sponge. Dry off the shutters with a clean, lint free cloth.

Repaint The Shutters

Apply a couple coats of acrylic paint to the surface of each shutter with a standard paintbrush. Use straight, even strokes to cover the wood. Wait for the paint to dry completely in between coats. Attach flower stencils to each shutter with masking tape.

If you can't find stencils that you like in a store, search for some free templates online and print them. Cut each one out with scissors.

Create a border around the edge of each shutter with the stencils. Fill in the stencils with acrylic paint colors that are different than the previous coats that were applied. Use a thin paintbrush to fill in fine details. Wait for the paint to dry before carefully removing the stencils.

Plant Some Flowers

Remove the vinyl tarp and decide where you would like to plant the flowers. Dig holes that form a straight line. Use a measuring tape to assist with evenly spacing the holes. Make sure that each hole is deep enough to hold the roots. Place an annual or perennial in each hole. If you are planting flowers that are different colors, arrange them so that they form a pattern.

Cover the roots and spray water at the base of each one with a garden hose. Place mulch around the bottom of each flower. Mulch will add beauty to the area and will help the soil retain moisture. Enjoy looking at your freshly painted shutters. Maintain the shutters by rinsing them off occasionally with a garden hose.
