5 Patio Cover Options That Help You Get More From Your Outdoor Space

A patio serves as the perfect spot for outdoor entertaining, or for simply enjoying the outdoors with family. Unfortunately, a surprise rainstorm or too much heat can make hanging out on the patio slightly less comfortable. Patio covers allow you to enjoy your patio under a much wider range of conditions, preventing bad weather or high temperatures from ruining your party. Check out these various patio cover options to find the one that best fits your lifestyle.

The Permanent Porch

Permanent patio covers are constructed from wood or masonry. They closely resemble the traditional front porch, but are designed to provide shade and weather protection over your backyard patio. Some consist of nothing more than a simple overhang, while others are more elaborate, with rails and screens to close in the space. This type of cover works best in mild climate zones, where it provides shelter from the sun and rain while still exposing your guests to outdoor temperatures. Some simple ceiling fans and a wood stove may allow you to use this type of patio cover year-round, regardless of the local climate.

Sun Room

Sun room installers use metal frames and glass panels to completely enclose your patio, typically tying it to the house so that it serves as an extra year-round room. These spaces offer temperature control, so you can enjoy sunlight and outdoor views regardless of the temperature outside. Some are used as sitting rooms, while others serve as a space for a pool or simply as a play area for kids.

Retractable Awnings

Retractable awnings serve as the perfect way to cover your patio without permanently changing the look of your home. Using a relatively simple winding mechanism, these awnings can be erected to cover your patio when you want to use it, then rolled back into a sleep metal casing when not in use. Because they provide no temperature control, awnings work best in moderate climates, or for homeowners who only want patio coverage during warmer months.

Pergolas

A pergola is an open structure made from wood, metal or composite beams. These structures help prevent direct sun exposure, but offer no protection against rain or other types of precipitation. One advantage to the pergola is that it provides plenty of space for airflow, which can mean greater comfort on very hot days. Look for carpentry contractors to construct these units out of wood, or pick up a DIY kit that uses PVC or metal.

Portable Covers

A portable patio cover works like a tent, using simple metal poles and canvas or fabric to provide shade where you need it. These covers fold up for easy storage, but can be quickly erected for parties or outdoor events. They are not designed for long-term outdoor use, and must be brought inside and stored when not in use. One advantage to a potable patio cover is that you can easily take it to other locations, such as on a camping trip or to the beach.
